In early summer of 2011 I decided my 10-year old beloved bagged Kenmore Progressive needed to be put out to pasture(RIP). I had replaced all of the filters and had it thoroughly cleaned in effort to keep it a little longer but it still wasn't sucking to my satisfaction.I purchased the Miela in August 2011 after an exhaustive internet search and my own personal testing. I have terrible allergies and routinely vacuum once or twice a week. I looked at and tested various bagged and bagless vacuums that are supposedly HEPA filtered and good for allergy suffers. Brands included Dyson, Bissell, Hoover, Kenmore and Shark. I found out which stores would let me return the vacuum and shopped only those stores. Out of my testing the Shark came closest to meeting my needs but none of them met my expectations. Flimsily built, weird controls(what designer thinks the start switch on the bottom of the handle is a good idea?!) even weirder or no attachments, hard to empty bags. The bagless kind were the worst having to empty the canisters and clean the filters after every use (yuck). I had seen reviews of Miela on various allergy websites and my own doctor recommended one but I balked at the price. After my disappointment with the other brands I went to visit my local Miela dealer. She let me take a floor model home with a new bag and try it over a weekend. I didn't just do a simple vacuum. I thought if I'm really going to consider spending nearly $1000 on a vacuum I'm going give it a thorough test drive. I was pleasantly surprised!I happened to still have the Shark bagless at home and did a side-by-side test with my old Kenomre (with a new bag), then the Shark (clean filter and empty canister), then the Miela(new bag). As I expected the Shark picked up more than the Kenmore but the Shark failed miserably when I followed it with the the Miela. How do I know it did better since the Miela has a bag that is sealed? Well, I dropped a handful of cat litter on the carpet! First the Kenmore, then the Shark and finally the Miela. The Miela picked up the litter the other two didn't. After the first test I didn't use the Kenmore again. Next test was cat hair on furniture. Score? Shark 0 Miela 2. What about the hard floors? Cat litter test again. Shark 0 Miela 3.You can read about the various features on the Miela website so I won't waste you time listing them. The Miela is a heavier than any other vacuum I tried but it's easy to steer. I like the twisting motion that allows me to get into tight corners and under furniture. The onboard attachments are convenient and easy to use. I especially like the brush that you can twist into various configurations. You don't find that on other vacuums! You can purchase additional attachments but they don't attach to the vacuum. The on/off and floor/carpet switches are on the handle so easy to use. The headlight is bright and does illuminate fairly well unlike most other vacuums. The biggest thing I've noticed that I think makes the Miela worth a look is how well it cleans. I've noticed that my house is less dusty and my air conditioning and room filters are not as dirty when I change them. There's not a trail of dirt glittering in the sun light streaming through windows. This vacuum picks up stubbon cat hair better than any other vacuum I tested. It seems solid and well built. There's not as much plastic on this one as with others. I expect it to last for many, many years but since I've only had it for 5 months I can't comment on reliability.HOWEVER, this is an incredibly expensive machine! The only reason I decided to purchase it was because of the side-by-side comparison I did with my old vacuum and the Shark plus the visible HEPA filtration. Most other vacuums say that are HEPA filtered but you can see it with this one. When you turn it on you can see the housing actually seal itself.If you don't have severe allergies or lots of animals this is likely more money than you want to spend on a vacuum. However, if money is no object and you truly want to have a good vacuum that does what the advertising hype states then look at a Miela.

Great Vacuum

So far I love this vacuum. Easy to use, tools are accessible, variable suction helps vacuum fabric surfaces like clothing in my closet that doesn't get worn often and collects dust on the shoulder. Easy to carry upstairs with separate handle on back. Reach with hose is good and ease of use of hose is wonderful...has it's own handle !! Changing bags is a bummer but I have had no bag vacuums (Dyson) in which the chamber lid breaks and makes emptying the chamber without dumping the dust on the floor challenging. Overall this vacuum beats Dyson mainly in the ease of use of tools and suction on tiles/hardwood floors. Both are equal in suction on carpet but the Miele offers a much better beater bar which shouldn't be use on looped carpet...yes it is that strong! Overall a great vacuum that I hope has a great lifespan.

Superior quality vacuum with killer looks!

Been on the vacuum market for more than four years, and after numerous brand comparisons it came down to the final three: an Oreck, a Dyson, or one of the Miele S7 series uprights. Somehow, I made the final decision and bought the Dyson DC25 when Amazon had it on their 'Gold Box' deal. A steal of a deal at $319 but....the Dyson felt flimsy and noisy. I also didn't like the way it sounded while retracting. Most of all I thought it was still too much money for a vacuum that's made almost entirely of ABS plastic -- and what a mistake that was. I returned the DC25 a couple of days later. By now I'm willing to fork out a little bit more for quality, perhaps for a Miele; and initially for the S7210 'Twist' but it was too basic so I ended up buying the S7280 'Jazz' with the HEPA & LED. Loved it but had to return it again due to shady seller for sending me a used unit with scratches. By this time I knew for sure I wanted a Miele no matter what. Long story short, I've always wanted one such as the S7580 Swing, Tango or Bolero with the electronic controls but they were too much money, and as my hunt continues I was able to locate a Lotus White S7580 'Pirouette' (Williams-Sonoma exclusive) for almost the same amount as the Jazz. Figure I'd pay a few more dollars for this top elite model, and I'm glad I did!The White S7580 Pirouette, essentially the same S7580 and shares 99.999% of features/components with the rests of the Elite line except for each of its color. The reason you won't see a Pirouette being reviewed or for sale online is because this is an in-store or special-order item and can only be provided by Diamond-Dealers as per Miele guidelines. I will also share a few pictures along with this posting.What I like:The machine is rock SOLID! Yes, it is heavier than your usual standard uprights but that's the price you pay for -- quality. There's not one hint of flimsiness nor cheapness on the Miele S7. The feel is amazing! It is like driving a German car at very high speeds on the Autobahn except the motor sounded more like a Boeing 747 jet and it hugs the road instead of skidding off, that's exactly how it felt every time I vacuumed with my S7. The swivel-neck maneuvers precisely on every twists and turns, and in my opinion it does a much better job than any Dyson Ball. One great feature on the motor is that it will stop right away if it picks up hard objects (like a sock, wire, or something sharp) to prevent further damage to the vacuum and item. The motor is powerful yet very quiet and does a fine job at any level and there are 6 different settings from low to high (actually 7 if you count 'Automatic'). On 'Auto' mode, the S7 will sense and adjust to the level of suction depending on what you are vacuuming when using the tools, or depending on the floor type.The high (loudest) is still much lower in decibel compared to industry standards and I can actually carry on a phone conversation while vacuuming, just amazing! The number one thing for me was how great my carpet felt afterward. The Miele not only cleans but also helped brought my flat carpet back to life, it felt more plush after I vacuumed. This is evidenced by the pool of footprints while walking on my freshly cleaned carpet, and that's something the Dyson was lacking, and for one of the more reasons why it went back. Unlike the Dyson, the on-board tools (swivel dust brush, upholstery and crevice tool) of the Miele S7 are flushed and neatly tucked in to the rear of the body. The aluminum wand also releases with a simple pull of the handle and extends even further. There is also a locking mechanism for the hose to prevent the vacuum from tipping over if further extended. The great part about this is that I can vacuum in a very large area without having to find another ac outlet because the 40Ft cord can cover a very large radius in one shot, and the other thing: I can also vacuum in very low lit areas and the amazing LED lights picks up all the little extras where the naked eye misses.Dislike:Expensive HEPA filter which needs to be replaced very 12 months, or 24 months if you vacuum less. This is per Miele's recommendation but I think you can stretch another 3-6 months due to the superior filtration of the dust bag and another pre-motor filter (or if you don't have pets). Speaking of which, the U bags costs more but the thickness and filtration seems to be worth it especially if you consider that this is a sealed system, and something allergy sufferers (like me) can benefit from. Like I mentioned earlier, weight can be an issue at first but that's because the S7 is a solidly built vacuum -- and one can quickly get used to its agility and performance. The finish of the body can be fragile and if you're not careful it can be scuffed very easily. I applied a nice coat of Turtle Wax on my new S7 before I took her out for a drive.Overall, this is the best vacuum I have ever laid my hands on, to be honest I have never enjoyed vacuuming until now. It's an expensive unit, but then again you're buying German-made quality and supposedly built to last for many years to come, and for that it is worth every dollar.
