I haven't had experience with other Miele models, but if this thing is any indication, Miele makes a line of excellent machines. Here is a quick rundown of SOME (but not all) of the advantages and disadvantages of this unit:Pros:+Excellent filtration (as good as it gets)+Quieter than any vacuum I've ever heard+Low ground clearance+Well designed/engineered in pretty much every aspect (I love the cord winder, wheels, bags, auto-shutoff, etc!)+Looks really slick while still subdued (doesn't scream "I'm a Dyson!")Cons:-Typical disadvantages of being a canister vac. Sometimes difficult to maneuver around corners/doors, sometimes a pain trying to reposition hose.-Attaching/detaching certain tools and the wand itself can be a little awkward at times-Price is steep!The bottom line is that if you can afford it, you absolutely can't go wrong with this vacuum (or presumably any Miele). I give it 5 stars because, while not *perfect*, it certainly is the best vacuum I've ever seen or used...and by a landslide.Note: If you have carpet, I'd recommend any model in the S5 line (except the Pisces, which doesn't include a powered brush head). For primarily hard floors, any of the Miele models should meet your needs.

Ten days in. Last week, my wife on the other end of the phone said "I don't like it, it's too hard to push on the carpet" (her first use). "What!" I thought, four figures lighter in my wallet and she doesn't like it. I got home after work and the machine was close by in the basement. I picked up the handle with the carpet head and tried it. The head glided over the carpet with no resistance, "it feels ok I said". "You have to turn it on", she said. I replied something like "ok, you mean because you now have a vacuum cleaner that actually sucks hard enough to give some resistance, you don't like it!" She must have though about this because lately she has commented on how quiet it is and how it does the furniture so well, she isn't going to give it up now.Is it possible to give an unbiased view after spending over $1000 on a vacuum cleaner. Let's just say here's my 2 cents.- the canister is a bit heavier than I thought but no different from the old Kenmore canister.- the machine is quiet for a vacuum cleaner but that does not mean it's quiet, i.e. some great progress has been made with appliances such as dishwashers (almost silent) but I won't hold my breathe for vacuum cleaners or hair dryers.- the components look and feel good quality and they work well together. - I cannot get the hang of hooking the brush and handle to the canister to stand upright when not in use. The mechanism does not work well, it takes several tries but this is small potatoes.- as mentioned excellent suction and the auto setting can be over-ridden.- the delivery from United Vacuums (via Amazon) beat the schedule by a couple days in excellent condition- the switches and lights are intuitive and its easy to work controls by foot and not having to bend over.- my wife who doesn't read manuals, read the manual and is teaching me things about it- the compartments open and close with ease and feel sturdyNo complaints so far and we're banking on things staying that way for a while as in years, that's what we paid for.

I was able to acquire one of these vacuums for $700 and because of the deal I was getting I splurged past the original amount that I was going to pay for a new vacuum. I currently own and have been using a Hoover Wind Tunnel upright for 13 years. We are slowly getting rid of all the wall to wall carpet in our house, (only two small rooms left.) The Hoover works well on our berber carpet but poorly on wood floors and its marginal-mostly-plastic-construction is beginning to fail in many places on the unit. That is the back story of our needs.I am a 6'2" - 45 year old male and a product designer by degree so my observations might be slightly skewed towards human factors but I am also the one in our house that does all of the cleaning so this review is from an end user. That's my story. The Miele Earth Canister vacuum is a very well constructed product that appears will last for many many years. Its solidly built and every detail was considered during construction. I have no worries that the unit won't take abuse or last forever. Its nice looking and relatively compact.. all the things you would expect from Miele and this price range.However, here is where Miele missed its mark and could have taken a good vacuum and made it great.1. The carpet cleaning power head is not designed to work well on any carpet that is not very flat and smooth, it does not have the heft or vibration required to loosen and remove embedded grit, sand, or dirt. Do not buy this vacuum if you planning on using it mostly on carpet, especially thick pile.2. The steel wands with internal power to supply the power head are well built but at the expense of a lot of weight. I use my vacuum to clean our vaulted ceiling and the tops of high cabinets and trim. Holding the Miele wand up in the air for any extended period of time is very tiring, which leads to issue three.3. The hose on the vacuum is not long enough. I know this is subjective to the user but I have noticed fighting the vacuum to get the hose in the right position to comfortably vacuum the floor and if you are trying to remove cobwebs from the ceiling the hose is not long enough to get anything higher than eight feet without lifting the unit off the floor and standing on a ladder, which leads to problem number four.4. Being well built also means heavy. The beauty of a canister vacuum is the ability to pick it up by the handle and carry it around while you vacuum especially say on a stairwell. But carrying this vacuum around is like carrying around a full bowling ball bag, it gets tiring quickly.5. Where this unit is over designed is in the handle and attachments. Someone spent a lot of time sculpting these pieces but I bet they don't vacuum much. When using the wand the handle rotates to let the hose move but the rotation is not quite enough in either direction so I am always grabbing the hose with my other hand to hold it out of the way and now its too short again. When you detach the wand and try to use just the handle, its a bulky and uncomfortable thing to maneuver, especially if you add one of the attachments to the end. Vacuuming the couch or raised surfaces is not as easy as it was with the simple hose and attachments from my old hoover upright. I could go into how each one of the attachments is just not quite the right shape or angle, but once again that probably more subjective. Lets just say I wish you could detach the hose from the bulky handle, it would be a simpler solution.6. Small issue, the cord on my Hoover upright let me plug into an outlet in the center of my house and vacuum the entire house. Because the cord retracts into the canister unit on the Miele, it has a constrained length and requires me to unplug the vacuum and move to another plug a couple times.7. Another small issue, the power button on the vacuum is on the top slash side of the canister, sort of like the tail lights on most cars nowadays. I am assuming that Miele was trying to make the vacuum easy to turn off by stepping on the switch instead of bending down every time. But, because the botton/switch is on the edge, half the time it doesn't work unless you come at it at just the right angle and if you are wearing something slippery like socks or slippers forget about it, there's just not enough friction to push the button down... very annoying to have to bend down to turn off the vacuum all the time.8. A couple other things that I will probably miss when I retire my upright is the larger disposable bag, (canister vacuums don't have very large bags) and the dust/dirt sensor light, which did actually work well on the Hoover as long as the bag was not too full.So, to conclude, I am not a huge fan of my Meile yet, but I wasn't a huge fan of my Hoover either. I am not easy to please because my design training taught me not to settle for second best when a better solution existed. I am going to purchase a couple of plastic wand extensions to resolve the weight issue when vacuuming the ceiling and higher objects. I was hoping to use this vacuum to clean the cars but I think I will stick to using my Fein Shop Vacuum for that because the attachments are easier to use and the hose is much longer. The Meile works really well on my wood, cork and tile floors, so once we remove the last wall to wall carpet that won't be an issue. The only issue that might be hard to rectify will be the length of the hose, it might be the thing that makes me sell the vacuum at some point. If Miele had an extension to double the length of the hose it might all work out. Meile didn't skimp on the design of this vacuum but they forgot to keep the ultimate rule of design in mind, 'the simpler solution is always the better one.'CheersFeb 18 2013 Update: Thought I would share something I did to make my expensive vacuum twice as useful(Miele are you listening?)I recently bought a Bosch VAC005 5-Meter Vacuum hose, a Fein 921072k13 hose Adapter, a stiff horsehair vacuum brush, and a white-plastic 1 1/2" Flanged Tailpiece(get this from the plumbing section in your local hardware store) all for less than $40. I know you don't want to spend more money but this set up, assembled together, now allows you infinitely more uses for your vacuum. The longer hose with a lighter and more flexible end makes it much easier to do any sort of job with the end accessories; like vacuuming the top of an armoire or bookshelves, or under or in back of some piece of furniture, or upholstery or curtains, or the car or anything that the Miele handle made so awkward a challenge before. Sorry for my run on sentence, but you get the idea, my vacuum is now as useful as it should have been when I purchased it.
